Top 10 music discoveries from 2010

The internet is full of music - some great and some not so good. The goal of Chompin has been to provide a way for you to discover music you didn’t know you loved, learn more about new artists, and share your finds with your friends.

We’ve compiled a top 10 list for 2010 that showcases some great artists. Each artist was featured by a blogger who works hard all year round to provide reviews and insights into great new music. It’s been a great year - we hope you discover something new and support the music you love.

Hello Chompers,

We’re strong believers in the power of sharing on social networks. It’s been something that’s always been baked into the essence of Chompin. Discover what your friends are listening to and share what you like. While we love Twitter, we found that people really wanted Facebook to share music with their friends. Chompin for iPhone launched!

Hey Chompers,

The wait is over! Apple recently approved Chompin for iPhone and we’re proud to announce it’s available for download in the iTunes store (iTunes link). This release brings all the music discovery features you’ve come to love on Android phones to iPhones and iPod Touches. We’ve decided to offer both ‘lite’ and ‘pro’ versions of the app. This ‘pro’ version comes with some cool new features that we’re excited to share:

Channels

When you tap on the menu button you’re presented with the usual Discover, Chomped, Friends, and Search tabs you’ve come to love in the Android version. Now you also get a series of Channels that allow you to further filter and select musical genres to explore. These Channels are created by analyzing each track and it’s related blog, extracting relevant keywords, and comparing with Last.fm’s tag APIs.

The fun part about Channels is that they change with the current music trends. For example, Rock and Country are pretty consistent, but Christmas or American might pop in during certain holidays or concert series.

Chompin for iPhone with Channels

This type of filtering was the most requested feature from our last poll and from your emails. We’ve had fun putting it together and think you’ll enjoy this new way to discover music on the go.

Lots more to come! Let us know what you think so far.

Thanks,

The Gnomes

Chompin for web browsers + iPhone app submitted

Hello Chompers,

We’re exited to announce Chompin for your web browser. Until today, Chompin has been available exclusively on Android phones. While we think the future of music and discovery is on your smart phone; we decided to take a few days out of the busy schedules and bring some Chompin joy to your web browsers. Chompin for the Web is both a destination to play music and a tool to share you’ve discovered with your friends.

With this product we’re introducing a new feature called Channels (coming soon to a mobile device near you). Channels are groups of songs that reflect the most common and popular genres, tags, and terms used to reference music on the interwebs. These Channels should remain relatively consistent, but it’s expected that they will evolve with online music trends (i.e. blogs, comments, reviews). Give them a shot and let us know what you think and which one you like best.

You can visit chompin.com (or here) to kick start your music discovery experience. You’ll be surprised at how much great music is out there that you didn’t know about.

The gnomes have been working overtime to get you a full featured version of Chompin for the iPhone. As of this week, we’ve submitted the application to Apple. There has been a lot of interest in the iPhone version and it seems that not a week goes by that we don’t hear from someone asking about when it will be ready. The wait is almost over. As soon as it’s approved we’ll let you know. Here’s a sneak peak:

Thanks for your support. Without you, we would only be doing this for ourselves. Finally, the Gnomes are hungry for attention - please let us know what you like and what you want us to change. We thrive on feedback.

Release 1.0.5: Notification Preferences added & Amazon MP3 store fail.

Hey Chompers,

The Gnomes are good listeners and hard workers. We’re proud to announce the latest release of Chompin for Android, version 1.0.5. We understand that many of you like the notifications feature we released in 1.0.4. We also heard from several of you that you’d like more control over this feature.

With that in mind we redesigned the Settings screen a bit and added the ability to control notifications messages from the application. Yay!

We fixed a few reported FC bugs and added higher resolution graphics for newer phones (i.e. EVO and Droid X). We also noticed that in newer releases of the Amazon MP3 application they block our ‘buy MP3s’ feature. We’re a little baffled as to why Amazon would decide to do this - not sure if they don’t like Gnomes or just made some ‘undocumented enhancements’. Allowing external applications to launch and search the Amazon store (even without affiliate integration) should be good for users and for Amazon’s bottom line. We’ll keep trying to bring this feature back because we think it’s good for the music ecosystem and good for our users.

If you notice any bugs, want to submit a feature request, or want to learn more about the gnomes, please feel free to drop us an email.

As always, keep discovering new music!

Tickets + Push Notifications + Friends Views + Google Search.

Hey Chompers,

More goodness coming from the busy gnomes at Chompin. Last release we put out a poll asking for input on our next set of features. The feedback that we got definitely validated some of our thinking and we’re happy to announce 4 new features.

Press and hold any track to access the 'Discover More' menu

First, buy concert tickets for touring bands! A lot of great music flows through the Chompin system on a daily basis. Many of these bands are touring and we’re firm believers in the live music experience. Sample some hot new tracks, buy MP3s from and artist on Amazon, and get tickets to a live gig (via our friends at Bandsintown). Snap! Press and hold any track to access this feature in the ‘Discover More’ menu.

Second, search for artist on Google. Here at Chompin we believe things should always be simple. When you find a track you like it should be easy to save, share and get more. Part of getting more can mean you search for information about a band/artist. Now with one simple step you’re able to search Google for any artist you discover on Chompin - the music will keep playing and you can keep rockin. Press and hold any track to access this feature in the ‘Discover More’ menu.

Third, as you get more friends on Chompin we want to make sure you can filter their discoveries and find cool music. Lots of friends means lots of chomped tracks. Now when you’re in the Friends tab you can filter by friend or by date chomped (look for filters under the application menu). Working hard to make discovery through your friends easy and clean.

Fourth, wouldn’t it be great to know when new music is added to Chompin? We thought so too! With this release we’ve added background push notifications that let you know exactly when new music is added to the main Discover tab and when your friends chomp new tracks. Look for this in the Android status menu at the top of your screen.

Along with these new features we’ve made general performance improvements and fixed some isolated bugs and crash scenarios. Can’t ever be too fast or too stable!

If you notice any bugs, want to submit a feature request, or want to learn more about the gnomes, please feel free to drop us an email.

As always, keep discovering new music!

Feature Poll

Amazon + Twitter + Performance. Chompin for Android v1.0.3.

Hey Chompers,

Chompin for Android w/ AmazonWe’ve pushed the latest update for Chompin to the Android Marketplace. In this release we’ve listened to your feedback and added a couple features that you’re sure to like:

If you’re device doesn’t have the Amazon MP3 Store installed, follow these instructions (or google others) to get it installed. We’re strong believers in a music economy where discovery is free and purchasing more content/goods/experiences pays the artist and funds the ecosystem.

The gnomes are hard at work on upcoming features. Let us know which ones you want most:

If you like what we’re doing, please let us know (we’re needy that way). Also drop us a review on the Android Marketplace to let others know how we’re doing.

Thanks for all the support. Keep discovering new music. Chomp!

First week in the wild!

Hey Chompers,

It’s been about a week since we launched Chompin for Android. The response so far has been fantastic! Thanks to everyone who’s downloaded the app and provided feedback. Us gnomes love feedback, so don’t hold back

Chompin is all about music discovery. How do you find great music in the real world? We believe that music discovery happens through people you trust and through respected editorial sources. Your friends and top notch bloggers! Don’t just listen to the music, read about it. Often you’ll find that there’s info on band members, concert reviews, upcoming gigs, photos, links to MySpace pages, and ways to purchase their latest albums.

We’re not going to tell you who the next big thing is. We’re not providing access to a music catalog. You can find services that do this all over the internet.

We want you to find something new, something that you love, and are willing to support. People are out there talking about good music on blogs and in bars. We want to help you find the music you didn’t know you loved.

We started with an idea. We’re building and refining that idea. We’d love to get your feedback and hear what you think. What music are you discovering? What about the app works for you and what doesn’t? Tell us and we might just send you a free t-shirt.

Start chompin today and tell your friends.
